Artist:Jon & Lee And The Checkmates"This is a VERY UNUSUAL piece of Batman memorabillia the likes of which I have never seen before. I believe it to be a demonstration record that was created long before the television show ever aired. Here are my clues – it came in a batch of records out of New York City. The batch was primarily promos on the 20th Century Fox label with a few other labels thrown in. The mix of records and notes on some of the sleeves led me to believe these came from an artist, musician, studio engineer or recording execuitive of some kind. All of the records were in similar, unplayed condition. The latest record in the batch that I can date is 1964. This record is a pressed vinyl record (as opposed to an acetate) just like the others. The record has no matrix numbers or delta numbers. The words “Batman Theme” and “Batman # 2” are etched in the trail off wax of the respective sides. The front is a 45 second long version of the “Batman Theme” which sounds just like the television show version. There are no credits. There is no mention of the show, movie, comic book or publisher. The flip side is credited to “Jon & Lee and the Checkmates”. The song, “Batman Batusi” (like “Watusi” with a “B”, get it?) is credited as written by Duke Edwards. The record actually rocks with a shouting, R&B-based garage vocal duet backed up with a pounding organ and drum beat. There are a couple of nifty, soaring organ breaks thrown in too. While the catchy lyrics (“Come on.. Come On.. and spread your wings.. the Batusi is the thing” or something like that) are not overwhelming, the record DOES rock. The crude nature of the recording leads me to the conclusion that this is an early demo for the song that ultimately was used on the TV show."
